Tenth Ward Bottle Club Release: Amarelico
Written by Monica Pearce, Boss Lady
Ever heard of Frangelico? Ever heard of Amaretto? LOVE BOTH? Yep, we made a spirited love child out of the two and it’s AMAZING!
Made from hazelnut, cacao and vanilla, Frangelico has a lush, toasty flavor, with hints of vanilla and white chocolate, as well as complex herbal flavors. As legend goes, Frangelico is based on a seventeenth-century liqueur made with hazelnuts and local herbs by Christian monks in the Piedmont hills of Northern Italy. More specifically, the recipe is said to have been invented by a hermit monk named Fra Angelico.
Also of Italian heritage, Amaretto has more almond-like baking notes to its flavor profile and is made typically with almonds, vanilla and other herbs and flavors. Amaretto is said to have been invented in 1851 by the Lazzaroni family, who were already known for their almond flavored cookies.
The most important question to ask – why hasn’t anyone blended them together until now?!
How It’s Made
Using a pure sugar cane base, we rested the initial spirit in Tobacco Barn rum barrels for only a month to get just a hint of that delicious burnt caramel rum note. Once harvested from the barrel, the spirit was infused with hazelnut, almond, vanilla, chai, orange peel and orris root. The spirit was then sweetened with brown sugar to add a nice rich flavor to it.
We very lightly filtered this item hoping not to strip too much flavor; this might have resulted in some sediment. Lastly, there was very little proofing down to do, as the density of the brown sugar already took care of that.
Tasting Notes: Immediate sweetness and a toasted nuttiness on the nose with chai and baking spice to the taste. Finishes rich with a burnt caramel note.
The tasting research on this one was real tough ya’ll.
